The Adventures Away from Home programme delivers fully funded, high‑quality outdoor learning experiences for disadvantaged and underrepresented young people across Cambridgeshire, building the confidence, resilience and sense of possibility that can change the course of their lives.

The situation
Too many young people in Cambridgeshire grow up with limited horizons. Financial hardship, social isolation, disability, care experience and mental health challenges can trap them in a small, closed world.
Many lack the confidence, resilience and sense of possibility to understand what they’re capable of.
Without intervention, they may never discover the wider opportunities available to them.
The change we create
Adventures Away from Home gives young people the chance to step outside their everyday lives and discover what they can achieve.
Through fully funded day and residential experiences at our flagship centres Grafham Water Centre and Burwell House, young people try new activities, take positive risks and experience success - often for the first time.
Through climbing, canoeing, problem‑solving, rafting, archery and shared time away from home, they build confidence, resilience and connection, and widen horizons.
Our instructors specialise in supporting young people who face barriers, ensuring every session helps them see themselves differently and recognise their capacity to grow.
Proven success
Delivered locally through Cambridgeshire Outdoors - part of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Children, Education and Families directorate - the programme consistently delivers strong, measurable outcomes.

However, demand exceeds the government-backed UK Youth funding available. To continue offering these places and reach the young people who need them most, your support is essential to close the local funding gap.
A story of impact
Many young people supported by the Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign arrive in the UK carrying the weight of upheaval, loss and uncertainty. For teenagers, this often means isolation, low confidence and very few chances to simply feel like young people.
When a group from CRRC arrived at Grafham Water, they were quiet and unsure. As the day unfolded, they climbed ropes, took to the water, solved team challenges, shared laughter and surprised themselves. By the end they were walking taller, energised by what they had achieved.
As one girl said: “That’s one of the best things I’ve done in my life!”
